Bluetooth interference: understand signals and troubleshoot connections

  • July 24, 2025

When Bluetooth stutters or disconnects, the cause may be radio interference, distance, power supply, antenna placement or software. Here we investigate through observation and controlled changes to our own devices.

Bluetooth shares the frequency band

Bluetooth uses the 2.4 GHz band alongside technologies including Wi-Fi. BLE has 40 radio channels. The three primary advertising channels are used for discovery, while an established connection uses the general-purpose data channels and frequency hopping. BLE is therefore not limited to three fixed channels when devices communicate.

See the Bluetooth SIG’s BLE primer and its explanation of adaptive frequency hopping. Range and resilience depend on the particular radio, antenna, distance and traffic; a product name alone cannot promise a particular result.

A simple troubleshooting plan

  1. Establish a baseline at short range with a sound power supply and known firmware. Record what actually fails: discovery, pairing or data transfer.
  2. Keep the antenna clear of metal, loose wires and ground planes that the manufacturer advises against. Compare without changing several things at once.
  3. Check whether failures coincide with heavy Wi-Fi traffic on your own devices. Move ordinary data traffic to 5 GHz if the equipment supports it.
  4. Log disconnections and signal strength. RSSI is useful for comparisons, but is not a precise distance measurement.
  5. Try a known-good cable, another supply and another client to separate radio problems from software and power problems.

Measure instead of interfering

Use passive scanners or suitable analysis equipment to observe radio activity. Do not transmit noise or false packets at other devices. Deliberate interference can affect equipment beyond the device you intend to test. Professional interference tests belong in a controlled, authorised test setup.

An ordinary nRF24 radio is not a Bluetooth radio, and one ESP32 board does not necessarily have the same Bluetooth features as another. Check the exact chip and selected software.

Your next project

Choose a board with Bluetooth and build a small status monitor that logs the connection to your own phone. It is a useful way to learn advertising, connections and troubleshooting without disrupting a neighbour’s network.
