MQ8

MQ8 is a gas-sensor module for experiments with hydrogen. Gas exposure changes sensor resistance, and the module’s analogue output can be read with a suitable ADC. Response is not selective: other gases, temperature, humidity and sensor ageing affect readings.

The module does not directly provide a calibrated ppm value. Quantitative readings require gas-specific calibration, reference conditions and documentation for the fitted sensor. On digital-comparator boards, the potentiometer adjusts the switching threshold rather than the sensing element’s intrinsic sensitivity. LED status is not a documented safety threshold.

Follow the conditioning and warm-up requirements for the exact sensor revision. Current Winsen reference datasheets typically specify at least 48 hours of initial preheating; stabilisation is also needed after subsequent power-up and storage. Initial conditioning does not remove the need for later warm-up and checks.

5V modules can produce analogue and digital signals near the supply voltage. Do not connect these directly to a 3.3V input without checking levels and using suitable voltage division or level conversion. This is a development and educational module, not a certified gas/CO alarm or a medical or legal measuring instrument.
