Check the module’s supply and output voltage against the controller’s input limits before connecting it. A 5V supply does not make the signal safe for a 3.3V GPIO or ADC; use suitable level/voltage conversion. Analogue signals require an ADC, which a standard Raspberry Pi computer does not include.
Explore gas sensing with this sensor module.
MQ2 is an analogue semiconductor gas sensor used in electronics experiments. It responds to smoke and several combustible gases, so its output does not identify one specific gas. The heater requires 5V. Quantitative concentration measurements require calibration and consideration of temperature, humidity and other gases.
The module's potentiometer sets the digital switching threshold, rather than calibrating gas concentration. Connect the analogue output to a suitable microcontroller ADC, Arduino or Raspberry Pi observing the input voltage limits of your controller.
The Winsen MQ-2 specification uses a preheat time of at least 48 hours under its test conditions. Allow stabilisation after power-up and calibrate for the intended conditions. This experimental module is not a certified smoke, gas or life-safety alarm and must not replace one.
